Long before the city of Akumal was populated large sea turtles chose its inviting shoreline as their home and nesting ground. The turtles knew from the beginning that the this tropical paradise with its sugary white beaches and beautiful bays was heaven.

Writer, archaeologist and businessman Pablo Bush Romero confirmed that the Akumal beaches were heavenly, which encouraged the growth of this seaside town.

Today, Akumal beaches are coveted by local residents and visitors. The population has changed, but the beaches have remained the glorious vision that turtles and Romero saw many moons ago.

The Akumal Bays provide ample beach for everyone to share and does not leave anyone with a the feeling that the beaches are overcrowded.

Visitors find the social areas of the beach to meet other visitors, while more private bathers seek out less social areas. All the bays are great for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, diving, beach combing and socializing. The Central Akumal beach features a clean white, sandy beach with beachside shops, restaurants, dive shops and homey beachfront accommodations. Lol Ha Restaurant and Beach Bar is a local favorite beachside hangout where you can watch local sports during the day and have a cool beachside dinner in the evening.

Oh the glories of Akumal. The bay waters are calm as this stretch of the beach is protected by a reef break. Being close to Yal-ku Lagoon , a fresh water river that runs out to the sea, makes North Akumal Beach a colorful underwater world adventure.

There are a series of bays with fine snorkeling. The "town" of Akumal is on Akumal Bay. There are two small grocery stores and about 7 restaurants scattered throughout the area. Xel-Ha: A natural playground of crystal clear water for snorkeling, rivers and lagoons, caves and jungle paths. Admission includes access to al areas of the park, train to the river, float tubes, life vests and parking. Swimming with the dolphins is extra. Snorkel equipment available for rent.

Open 7 days a week from a. Phone or Tankah, Soliman Bay: South of Akumal, these areas are more remote. The area consists of private villas along the beach. And in Tankah, there is Casa Cenote Restaurant which we highly recommend. Tulum is one of the most famous Mayan archeological sites. This walled city is perched on a towering cliff overlooking the magnificent Caribbean Sea. Centuries ago, this location provided access to fishing boats for the Mayan culture.

Trade was an essential living for the Mayans and this was a primary route. Today, you can view the ruins of this ancient civilization and enjoy unforgettable views of hte Caribbean from the lofty seaside cliffs. Coba is the location of another major Mayan archeological site. This site has not been fully excavated and lies deeper in the jungles.

Chichen Itza: another Mayan site, probably one of the most well known and largest. Cozumel: Mexico's largest island, it is located about 12 miles off the coast. You can travel from Cozumel to the mainland easily by ferry. Ferries start running early in the morning and continue throughout the day until late evening. Cozumel offers world class scuba diving, extraordinary snorkeling, parasailing, jet skiing, horseback riding and unlimited shopping and dining opportunities.
