Why does boomhauer have a badge

In " Dog Dale Afternoon " Season 3, Episode 20 , Dale is fooled into thinking secret agents have stolen his lawnmower. In reality, Bill, Hank, and Boomhauer did it as a gag, but Dale can't put the pieces together, and is a paranoid wreck by the end of the episode. In his befuddled condition, he goes to fumigate the Arlen Community College clock tower.

Bill mistakes his bug-killing equipment is a rifle. Police arrive and prepare to storm the premises to nab Dale, but Boomhauer and Hank convince the cops to let them talk Dale down. No doubt Boomhauer worked some secret government back channels to make sure this happened - not even in a world as whacky as that of King of the Hill could cops let what they think is a crazed gunman's buddies go talk him down.

A conspiracy is surely afoot here. What's more, consider the set up - what if Boomhauer engineered the situation to see how Dale would react to what he perceived as a threat to his safety? Could he flush him out? Is it a thought and behavior experiment? Surveilling Dale is too big a job for one man. With all the Mountain Dew and cigarettes, Dale may never sleep, and no doubt makes use of all 24 hours in the day. That's why Boomhauer more than likely works with Bill in keeping tabs on their mutual friend.

Bill not might seem like an obvious choice, but think about it: he's in the Army, bored out of his mind, in the grips of despair, and extremely strong , all attractive traits for an undercover field operative tracking a potential terrorist. Bill has never been deployed by the Army. In the end, instead of being a key plot point that could have changed the series for the better, it was nothing more than a throwaway gag that landed with a thud in the closing moments of King of the Hill.

Specifically, it showed his wallet, with a Texas Ranger badge. Was he really a Texas Ranger though, or was this just something he used to get ladies? It seemed to me like he couldn't be a Texas Ranger for several reasons: His trademark near-incomprehensible way of speaking would make it difficult or impossible for him to deal with either citizens or suspects profesionally He did a number of illegal things with Hank, Dale, and Bill though admittedly law enforcement employees break the law all the time, so this is a weak point There were a number of times when he and the guys needed law enforcement, like when they were being terrorized by a former NFL player who the cops wouldn't arrest due to his star power, but he never showed his badge or said he was a Ranger He was involuntarily committed to an insane asylum for wandering the street in his underwear and seeming to have threatened a cop.

Improve this question. Hack-R Hack-R 1, 4 4 gold badges 18 18 silver badges 37 37 bronze badges. I thought this was one of the best reveals of the series. I choose to believe he is a Ranger. In high school he had an infamous mids Mustang named "Ms. Sally" but had to get a new car after Hank, Bill, and Dale accidentally drove it into a quarry while playing a prank on him. While attending high school with the three others, he played on the football team as the starting quarterback.

His idol is Wilt Chamberlain probably for both his athletic prowess and for his famous luck with women , and he is allergic to macadamia nuts. Boomhauer's friends seem to consider him a source of good advice.

He has a good relationship with Hank but occasionally loses his patience with Dale's insanity calling him "Gribble" , but seems to be close to him, as its revealed in an episode that he and Dale leave every year on a Memorial Day fishing trip, disguised as Boomhauer going to a family reunion and Dale going to a UFO convention. They presumably don't invite Bill and Hank since Bill can get on both their nerves with his stupidity and Hank with his constant talking down of the group.

Boomhauer also gets annoyed with Bill's inferiority complex though respects him for helping him get over a woman. He is frequently the voice of truth and reason in their group, but since these confessions are barely understandable, they often go ahead, unless another character repeats what he said as though agreeing with him. He also proves to be rather cultured in one episode, calling Hank "ignorant" after Hank makes derogatory comments about modern art, and referencing Marcel Duchamp's famous Fountain and Dadaism.
