What is edmonton named after

By deciphering the cultural significance of a particular place name, one can generally discover where the earliest settlers of that region were from. It was in this period that competition was fierce against the North West Company for the monopoly of the fur trade. This first outpost was built near the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, where Aborigines such as Cree and Blackfoot Indians brought animal pelts for trade.

There are actually five Edmonton Houses that were built on the frontier throughout the years of the Fur Trade. Three of these fronts are located within the present scope of the city of Edmonton, while one Fort Edmonton is located near Pakan, Alberta.

This was the first fort to bear that name. Five different Fort Edmontons were built over the next 50 years as previous iterations were destroyed by floods or abandoned due to lack of customers.

The fifth and final fort was constructed in on the site of the current Alberta Legislature grounds, where a lawn bowling green now stands. He is currently working on a multivolume scholarly edition of the Edmonton House fur trade journals, of which the first two volumes ; have already been published.

He was present at the meeting of the governors of the HBC when it was decided to establish a fort on the North Saskatchewan River. Ens does not think this claim is very credible, however.
