At the gate you will clear your trekking permits, meet up with your porters, guide, cook and game ranger, and start climbing. You will pass open grassland which will give you a good opportunity to see buffaloes, warthogs and other grazers. You will cross the Ngare Nanyuki River and continue climbing through mountain forest. There you will have chance to see many different kind of birds and black and white colobus monkeys.
Finally you will reach Miriakamba Hut where you will stay overnight. Second day climbing is quite short but demanding. You will start early in the morning and ascent steeply through lush mountain forest full of birds to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge.
There you can see the crater. After 3 to 5 hours climbing you will reach Saddle Hut where you will have lunch. In the afternoon you will have another hiking to Little Meru m for superb views before sunset. Then you will return to Saddle Hut for overnight. You will start climbing between 1 to 2 at night.
The route is very steep towards Rhino Point m and from there towards the summit along very narrow ridge. You will reach the mount meru summit, Socialist Peak, m right at the sunrise. How much shooting gear did you bring along?
We each had one camera on the climb. And we would just trade them off. There are obviously power constraints and storage constraints. We had to be really selective in our shots. Did the team run into any problems? Was that a departure for you? There have been a couple iterations of this film. Docs are like that; it takes years to nail down what you want. But when I met my wife, Chai, she came in and she recognized immediately you have to be a character in the film.
Did you treat yourself differently, as a character in the film, than you did the other climbers? I was shielding myself, for sure. It was a good turn of the table—getting a taste of my own medicine. What made you change your mind? But I was honestly really inspired by the mountain. Chin says he never even considered turning the film into a feature-length documentary until after the climb. He began assembling rough cuts, and showed them to Vasarhelyi in So she stepped behind the camera to interview the climbers and their families to flesh the film out.
